Funny, the contrast between "$alliance seemed to use $exploit" and the vehement "I was IN $alliance and never saw any $exploit!" - the latter being, of course, true, because nobody wanted to see it. For as much as any given alliance talked about not tolerating cheating, popular and/or useful people were given the benefit of more doubt than could really be said to exist, more often than not.

Catching a multi in your own alliance, reporting it up the chain, and then getting summarily told to fuck off because they're so very sorry and won't do it again (and also too useful to risk losing) is an unpleasant experience.

Add this to the list of many things that may have helped implode it, I guess.

Having fought both along side and against a number of members of SD over the rounds, I seriously doubt anyone can both use trigger scripts and be that lousy at hunting. xD

OK that disingenuous. All the points of poor new player support and retention, cheating dramas, and god awful new concepts and changes played their part.

So did the horrific way we often treated each other (yes my hand is up here), and the unfortunate insiders / outsiders nature of things like the testing team (which was scandalous at best, I believe some were "testing" ways to cheat rather than testing at all).

On the note of cheating within alliances and not wanting to see it etc, the first thing I did when handed the supermod keys was a detailed investigation into every KAOS player and ban the multis (I banned several players). However I also personally knew of a KAOS friend who was using another KAOS friend to scout for him on multiple accounts, and that they basically shared accounts. I could not show it using the supermod interface - and I tried for several hours - and did not ban either of them. Yet I knew they were cheating. Ethical quagmires everywhere. Can you ban a friend for what is said in confidence, with them not knowing that you are a moderator (mods IDs were secret of course)? The bans were anonymous and evidence / methods were never released, and I could have banned them on my word, and if Jerle asked why I imagine he would have accepted it...

I still don't know what the right thing to do was. In the end I took the path of least resistance :)

Just because I could recall writing something about the testing piece years ago, I went and found it. Eventually. The only relevant piece was this:

"There was abuse. I'll confirm this without a hesitation. Anyone who has spoken to me in Nomad, especially fellow testers who saw my many comments on this, will know this. The misconception is that it was systematic and organised. It was not. I recall my own comments when I first got into test zone in 2.6 - that if this was a conspiracy, it was a pretty poorly organised one"

I added a ridiculous amount of text and example for some reason. Read here if you care. I don't think i really do any more. :P

All that said, I think what killed it was the admins giving up. At no point was it unfixable.

Yeah, that probably didn't help. It was a slow and painful death but I think everyone saw it coming.

Then it happened all over again with Fleets.

It died because it was past it's expiry date, and games like eve and wow were more appealing.

I am currently playing no mans sky, which is kinda like a solo tdzk on steroids.

those of us in the southern hemisphere were playing on 300ms+ pings, vs guys like spaceghost who was a network admin at a big datacentre and had 10ms pings. Nowadays I get 130ms to the east coast and can play most MMO's. I remember masterchief had a trainer, and you could practice attacking. On a version I hosted on my own webserver I was able to get 20+ levels higher than the USA based one which I think was quite revealing. The fact we were able to get kills at all was a miracle.

If it was done in html5 or something, it could live again

I don't think you could get away with text + images in 2016. Any attempt to revive TDZK would likely involve iOS/Android apps and a buttload of Unity or custom game engine. I went pretty far in mocking up ideas (the whole range from *slightly* more art that 3.0 to full blown game UI). I suppose the NDA on those is long dead, maybe I'll put them on here when I login again next year.
